The art of passing according to Michael Carrick / ©Icon Sports

What is a good pass? "A skill that is refined and worked on throughout one's career," says former international Michael Carrick, a leading player in the Premier League during the 2000s with 18,978 passes. Having played for West Ham, Tottenham, and Manchester United, the former midfielder gave his definition of a good pass in an interview with the Football Association's media outlet. For the former assistant to José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United (2018-2021), a good pass must above all dictate the next one: "You have to put the ball with a certain angle and a certain power to your teammate, because you already know what the next pass will be, or at least, what it should be. So, you dictate to the receiver of the pass what he will do with the next, because you are supposed to have already seen everything. Your pass turns into a great pass if what happens is true to what you had in mind," concludes the former Middlesbrough manager (2022-2025).
