Could a mini revolution in professional refereeing be on the horizon? According to ESPN, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) has approved expanded trials for Football Video Support (FVS), an alternative to VAR. This system allows coaches to challenge decisions up to twice per match. "We are at the early stages of testing, and the experiences from the FIFA U20 and U17 Women’s World Cups will be carefully analyzed. So far, we haven’t noticed anything unexpected," said Pierluigi Collina, chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee. Several FIFA member associations have already expressed interest in participating in the trials. It’s important to note that FVS is not VAR. Due to a limited number of cameras, FVS cannot replicate VAR’s capabilities. Offside calls are a prime example: without correctly positioned cameras, only clear offside situations can be detected. Therefore, the on-field decision remains crucial. This development could reshape the way decisions are made in football. Stay tuned.
