An Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) is no longer a career-ending injury in professional football! A retrospective study conducted on Premier League and English Championship players reveals an exceptional return-to-play rate of 91.7% at the elite level following surgery. Even more surprising, researchers demonstrated that the average post-injury career longevity for players who suffered an ATR was 4.9 years, compared to just 3.4 years for the healthy matched control group. Although a re-rupture occurred in 19.4% of the athletes, the researchers noted that "this did not significantly affect overall career length, with age at the time of injury remaining the strongest predictor of retirement." These findings highlight the extreme effectiveness of modern rehabilitation protocols, which allow elite players to recover their form and enjoy long-term careers. This is excellent news for Liverpool and France forward Hugo Ekitike, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation following his severe injury in the Champions League.
